Courier and parcel services

Firms that say they carry parcels and packages as well as passengers. Check what they will take and how it is insured.

Some taxi firms also run a courier service, collecting and delivering parcels, documents and small items locally. It can suit same-day or urgent deliveries within your area, when a postal service would be too slow, or when an item is too valuable or fragile to leave to chance.

When you contact a firm, describe what you are sending: its size, weight, whether it is fragile, and whether it needs to be kept upright or dry. Give both addresses, who will hand it over and who will receive it, and the deadline. A firm can only tell you whether it can help if it knows what the item is.

Ask about insurance. A policy that covers a driver carrying passengers does not necessarily cover goods carried for payment, so ask whether the parcel is insured while in transit, up to what value, and what is excluded. For valuable items, you may wish to arrange your own cover.

Ask how delivery is confirmed. Some firms can provide a signature, a photo or a message once the parcel is handed over, and it is useful to have that record if there is a dispute. Agree what happens if nobody is available to receive the item.

Couriers will not usually carry anything illegal, dangerous or restricted, such as hazardous chemicals. If you are unsure whether an item is allowed, ask before you book.

The licensing rules mentioned on this page apply in England, Scotland and Wales. The rules are different in Northern Ireland.

Courier and parcel services: common questions

What can a taxi courier carry?
That depends on the firm and the vehicle. Parcels, documents and small items are the usual jobs. Tell the firm the size, weight and nature of the item and ask whether it can take it.
Are parcels insured while they are being carried?
Do not assume so. Insurance for passengers does not always cover goods, so ask the firm what cover applies to parcels in transit and whether you should arrange your own.
How do I know my parcel was delivered?
Ask the firm how it confirms delivery, for example a signature, a photo or a message from the driver, and agree what should happen if the recipient is not there.
