Firms that say they run vehicles carrying six to eight passengers, for groups that will not fit in one standard car.
A standard saloon taxi carries up to four passengers. When there are five or more of you, or you have a lot of luggage, a six to eight seat vehicle keeps the group together in one booking instead of two cars.
Vehicles carrying up to eight passengers can normally be licensed as private hire by the local council, which means they are booked in advance through a firm just like any other taxi. Vehicles with more than eight passenger seats fall under different rules, so if your group is larger than eight, ask the firm what it can provide.
When you book, give an accurate head count, including children and babies, because each person needs a seat. Ask whether the stated seating is for six, seven or eight passengers, and whether that still leaves room for luggage. In some people carriers the rear row of seats takes up much of the boot, so a full load of passengers and bags may not fit together.
Minibuses are popular for airport runs, weddings, days out, nights out and family gatherings. For a long or multi-stop trip, agree the route, waiting time and the return arrangements beforehand, and ask whether the quote covers them.
As with any private hire booking, check the firm is licensed by the council, and keep your confirmation with the agreed time, pick-up point and destination.
The licensing rules mentioned on this page apply in England, Scotland and Wales. The rules are different in Northern Ireland.
