School run taxis

Firms that say they take on school run and school contract work. Ask what checks are in place before you agree a regular booking.

School run taxis are regular, repeated bookings, such as the same pick-up and drop-off each school day. Some families book them privately, and some are arranged by a school or local authority as a contract. If your child's travel is arranged by the council, ask the council which firms it uses, because contracts are normally awarded through its own process.

For a private booking, it helps to be specific. Agree the pick-up and drop-off points and times, which days of the week are covered, what happens in school holidays and on training days, and how to cancel or change a journey at short notice. Put the details in writing so that everyone has the same information.

Taxi and private hire drivers are licensed by their local council, and in England and Wales councils generally require an enhanced DBS check as part of the licence. For school work, a school or local authority may also set extra requirements, so ask the firm what applies to its drivers and whether the same driver will do the run each day.

Ask about seat belts and booster seats for younger children, and how the firm handles a child who is unwell or a missed pick-up. Clear communication matters, so check how you will reach the driver or the office during the run and who to call if something goes wrong.

Always confirm the firm and vehicle are licensed by the council before you agree a regular arrangement.

The licensing rules mentioned on this page apply in England, Scotland and Wales. The rules are different in Northern Ireland.

School run taxis: common questions

How do I arrange a regular school run?
Contact the firm directly and give the child's pick-up address, the school, the days and times, and any needs the driver should know about. Agree how changes and cancellations are handled, and get the arrangement in writing.
Are taxi drivers checked for school work?
Licensed taxi and private hire drivers are normally subject to an enhanced DBS check by their council in England and Wales. A school or local authority may set further requirements for contract work, so ask the firm what applies.
Does the council arrange school transport?
Some councils arrange transport for eligible children, and they usually appoint firms through their own process. Contact your local council or the school to find out whether your child is eligible and who provides the service.
